Dental Savings Plan for Retired Military

By The Dental Savings EditorsReviewed August 20267 min readWe earn commission when you enroll. We don't get paid to rank plans.
Short answer

Retirement does not automatically include routine dental. TRICARE medical is separate from dental; retirees and family members may be eligible for FEDVIP Dental (enrollment is not automatic). VA dental is limited to listed eligibility classes — not every veteran. A dental savings plan is a membership discount (~$6.99–$12.95/month on the plans we review), no waiting periods, usable at participating dentists for work you pay yourself. This page enrolls Careington 500 Series via 1Dental — the same Careington/1Dental path other DSG answers use.

What TRICARE and VA actually say about dental

Live DSG pages do not document Tricare or VA dental benefits. The facts below are only what official pages state — not invented coverage, premiums, or wait times.

  • TRICARE medical is not dental. TRICARE's dental page says dental coverage is separate from TRICARE's medical coverage and is based on who you are. tricare.mil/CoveredServices/Dental
  • Retired service members: FEDVIP Dental. The same TRICARE table lists “Retired Service Members and Family Members” as “May be eligible for FEDVIP Dental.” Army / BENEFEDS materials state FEDVIP replaced the former TRICARE Retiree Dental Program, that enrollment is not automatic, and that retirees enroll through BENEFEDS. benefeds.gov/military
  • VA dental is class-based. VA lists specific classes (for example: compensable service-connected dental disability; former prisoner of war; 100% service-connected disability). If you do not qualify, VA describes buying dental insurance through VADIP if you are enrolled in VA health care or CHAMPVA. VA dental care

We do not publish FEDVIP premiums, VA procedure lists, or a claim that every retiree has free dental. Check those official pages for your status.

Where a savings plan fits

A dental savings plan is a membership, not insurance and not a military benefit. You pay the dentist the plan's discounted fee. Official TRICARE and VA pages do not document coordination with commercial discount plans — so this page does not invent one. If FEDVIP or VA already covers a visit, use that. If you have no dental benefit, or you are paying cash for work those programs do not cover, a participating-dentist discount is the gap this site reviews.

SituationWhat official sources saySavings plan role
TRICARE medical onlyDental is separate from medicalDiscount at participating dentists
FEDVIP DentalVoluntary enrollee-pay-all; not automaticOnly for fees you still pay yourself
VA dental (if you qualify)Class-based; not all veteransNot a substitute for VA care

What seniors-page procedure math still applies

Retired military and Medicare-age patients often need the same major work. These ranges are already on the live dental savings plans for seniors answer — not new prices.

4 things to check before enrolling

  1. 1
Confirm official eligibility first. Check TRICARE’s dental table and VA’s class list (linked above). A savings plan does not replace FEDVIP or VA care you already qualify for.
  2. 2
Verify your dentist is in-network. Every plan has a dentist lookup. If your office is not listed, the membership has no value there. Don’t assume a base-town dentist is in-network.
  3. 3
Confirm dentures and implants are on the fee schedule. Careington and Humana both include these on the schedules we already review. Ask the office for the plan rate before you book.
  4. 4
Look for specialist coverage if you need it. Periodontists and oral surgeons are often the gap. Careington’s 500 Series is the most comprehensive specialist schedule on this site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TRICARE cover dental for retired military?

TRICARE says dental is separate from medical. Retired service members and family members may be eligible for FEDVIP Dental. Enrollment is not automatic. Source: tricare.mil/CoveredServices/Dental.

Do all veterans get VA dental care?

No. VA assigns dental by eligibility class. Many veterans do not qualify for comprehensive VA dental. VADIP is the buy-your-own option VA describes if you don’t qualify. Source: va.gov dental-care page.

What is the best dental savings plan for retired military?

Careington 500 Series is the enroll CTA on this page ($12.95/mo individual, $129/yr). Humana is $6.99/mo per applicant. Aetna lists 262,000+ locations. Check your dentist first.

Can I use a savings plan with FEDVIP or VA dental?

A savings plan is a discount membership, not insurance. Official pages do not document coordination with discount plans. Use FEDVIP or VA for covered care; a savings plan only applies to fees you pay at a participating dentist.

Is there a waiting period?

No waiting period on the plans we review. Careington activates in about 3 business days. That is a savings-plan fact, not a TRICARE or VA fact.

Verdict

Retired military status does not, by itself, include routine dental. TRICARE medical is separate from dental; FEDVIP is the retiree dental path TRICARE lists, and it is not automatic. VA dental is limited to listed classes. A dental savings plan is the cash-pay discount this site already reviews: $6.99–$12.95/month, no waiting period.

Enroll Careington through the 1Dental path this site uses, or read the Careington 500 Series review. Check your dentist first. Careington details and Aetna details stay on their existing review URLs — this page does not invent a military plan.
